One of our finished quilts!

This quilt was made by Mother Janice Williams, a Bible teacher from Deliverance Church. Mother Williams began to get an idea for the design of her quilt. She said, “I want to use bright, happy colors! I love the joy of yellow—it is my favorite color.” She began working on her own design and we all decided that it looked like Joseph’s coat of many colors. She completed the design for the top quilt and had sewn it together.

Mother Williams was a widow who lived alone. She was in Stage 4 Cancer when she joined our free quilting class, which is held every Thursday afternoon. While Mother Williams was able to attend the class, she spent many happy days sharing stories and just spending good times in fellowship. One of our Pastors, Janice Blackmon aided her at this difficult time, moving in with her to encourage her and help her in home hospice car.

While Mother Williams has gone on now to be with the Lord we are still being blessed by her quilt. We all decided that we would finish her quilt and pass it on to someone who would appreciate the work she put in it. We raffled the quilt during our annual Community Day, 2015.

The joy of quilting and spending time with each other!

new quilt

Here is an example of the hand sewn quilt square.  Once all our squares are completed we will assemble them together in a creative way to make the top of our one-of a kind dynamic quilt.

Heritage Quilts

These are some of the last hand stitched quilts made by my grandmother Ms. Susie B. Jones of Macon, Ga.  She was born in 1872 and lived a hundred years before she passed on in 1972.  As her granddaughter I have saved and cherished these quilts reminding me of my beloved grandmother but also knowing that they represent a way of life that was part of America's history.  Susie's father was a slave freed under the Byrd family.  She washed and ironed clothes from her home.  She quilted for everyone in Macon, Ga. and everyone knew Susie B. Jones.  They brought her all their old clothes and scraps of material and she used them to create beautiful quilts.  They were sold for $5.00.  Susie B. Jones will be remembered through these quilts as they are handed down through my family and we remember her as a National Treasure.
